The School of Environment (SE) of Northeast Normal University (NENU) was established and developed basing on its predecessor, Institute of Environmental Science (1978). After over 40 years of rapid development, SE has received prestigious reputation and worldwide recognition in various research areas. Our mission is to provide quality academic education and training and to embody the aspirations of the world people and the global community through creation, preservation, integration, transmission and utilization of knowledge. SE is committed to cultivating talents for environment protection and to develop cutting-edge knowledge in ecological theory and applications.
The school consists of three departments, namely Department of Environmental Science, Department of Environmental engineering, and Department of Ecology. Besides the Longwan Wetland Experimental Station and Changling Grassland Experimental Station, we are also known for various research platforms, such as Key Laboratory of National Environmental Protection Wetland Ecology and Vegetation Restoration, Key Laboratory of Vegetation Ecology of MOE, and Key Laboratory of Animal Resource Protection and Utilization.
After long-term construction and development, the school has developed proficient and competent teams of teaching and research in the fields of Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and Ecology with 76 faculty and staff members, including 55 full-time teachers, 18 professors (including 15 doctoral supervisors), 20 associate professors (including senior engineers), 29 lecturers (including engineers, faculty postdoctoral, and postdoctoral technicians) and 9 administrative staff members. The teacher group is mainly composed by young and middle-aged teachers, namely, 4 of them over the age of 55, 10 aged from 45 to 55, 22 aged from 35 to 45, and 19 under the age of 35. The proportion of young teacher aged under 45 is 75%, and most of them are highly educated. A total number of 52 teachers have received Ph.D. degree and most of them have overseas experiences. Currently, our school has 2 specially-appointed professors (academicians), 2 members of Discipline Review Group of State Council Academic Degrees Committee, 2 winners of "Thousand Talents Program", 1 winner of "National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars", 1 winner of "Hundred Talents Program" sponsored by Chinese Academy of Sciences, 4 winners of "New Century Excellent Talents" of Ministry of Education, 3 distinguished professors of "Changbai Mountain Scholars" of Jilin Province, 1 "Honorary Professor", 4 Distinguished Professors of "Fangwu Plan", and 3 "Dongshi Scholars".
The teaching condition of the school has continued to improve. At present, the teaching building, located in Jingyue district, Changchun, Jilin Province, with construction area of 11000 square meters has been completed and put into service. The building has a multi-functional lecture hall with capacity of 180 people, including 6 multimedia classrooms, one computer teaching laboratory, and one experimental center consisting of fundamental laboratory, spectroscopy room, chromatography room, molecular ecology laboratory, cell culture room, etc. So far as I know, the teaching condition of the school has reached the advanced level in China.
The school has cultivated a large number of personnel for colleges, universities, institutions, governments and enterprise, and more than 1700 undergraduate students and 740 graduate students have obtained their degrees up to now. Among graduate students, there are provincial and ministerial level leading cadres, National Outstanding Youth Fund winners, Cheung Kong Scholar Distinguished Professors, Ministry of Environmental Protection top-notch young talents, business executives, etc. At present, 368 undergraduate students, 183 master students, 52 doctoral students and 13 foreign students are going to obtain their degrees from the school.
The school mainly has three research interests: 1. Environmental Pollution and Control Chemistry, focusing on typical ecological risk assessment of organic pollutants, electrochemical detection of pollutants, cell toxicity, recycling of plant waste, the design and application of environmental friendly and efficient catalyst; 2. Environmental Disaster Risk Assessment and Management, focusing on environmental disaster risk formation mechanism and methodologies of quantitative forecasting and early warning, environmental planning, evaluation and risk prevention and control, environmental disaster assessment, support technologies of management and emergency decision; 3. Water Pollution Control Engineering and Technology, focusing on wastewater treatment and degradation mechanism, process control and resource utilization, other wastewater treatment technology coupling mechanism, new advanced oxidation water treatment technology and water safety assurance technology.
Three research directions have been set up in Department of Ecology: 1. Animal Ecology and Conservation Biology, focusing on mammalian acoustic behavior characteristics, learning process, developmental mechanisms, functional adaptation and evolutionary mechanisms, important sensory phenotype adaptive radiation mechanism and species formation; 2. Ecological Security and Ecological Restoration, focusing on wetland biodiversity, functional diversity, hydrological and ecological processes and mechanisms of functional changes and safety evaluation, identification, evaluation and restoration technology of damaged wetland ecosystem; 3. Grassland Inter-Species Relationship (food web and trophic level) and Ecological Function, exploring interspecific relationships and the stability mechanism of ecosystem, trophic level effect and system multi-function.
So far, the school has obtained research funds with more than 110 million Yuan, supported by over 300 national and provincial-level programs, including 7 National Science and Technology Major Projects (on water pollution control), 4 National Science and Technology Support Programs, 3 National "973" Projects, 3 National Public Welfare Industry Scientific Research Projects, 3 National Natural Science Foundation of Major Projects, 1 Outstanding Youth Fund, 44 National Natural Science Foundations of China, 32 National Natural Science Foundations for Youth of China, and more than 200 provincial level funds. Up to now, the school has published a series of important findings and obtained a number of scientific research awards and patents, including 214 SCI(E) papers, 18 EI papers, 3 National Science and Technology Progress Awards, 1 Scientific Research Outstanding Achievement Award of Ministry of Education (MOE), 1 Dayu Water Science and Technology Award, 5 Jilin Province Science and Technology Progress Awards, 12 monographs, more than 20 textbooks, 40 patents, and 12 software copyrights.
Over the years, the school has established widely exchanges and cooperations with more than 20 world class universities, organizations and enterprises in terms of mutual visits, collaborative scientific research and joint education programs, including Georgetown University, University of California (Los Angeles), Pennsylvania State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and University of Connecticut in USA; University of Wisconsin, and University of Aberdeen in UK; University of Manchester in German; University of Alberta in Canada; Tokyo University, Kyoto University, Hokkaido University, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Waseda University, and Tsukuba University in Japan; University of Technology, Sydney in Australia; Massey University in New Zealand; University of Bergen in Norway. Every year, the school invites more than 10 international well-known professors for cooperation, selects a number of graduate students to go abroad for co-education and receives foreign students and visiting scholars from foreign countries for communication. In recent years, the school also undertakes the cultivation tasks in Ecology of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), exchanges graduate students with departments of five member countries. The school has successively signed a bilateral cooperation agreement with the Russian University of Novosibirsk and the Russian People's Friendship University. The graduate students in Ecology can be exchanged for study and obtain the degree certificate from both university and SCO.
Up to now, the school has three undergraduate majors, including Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering and Ecology. The major of Environmental Science is the national specialty and the first batch of brand building professionals in Jilin Province. The school is aiming to cultivate undergraduate students who can adapt to the needs of national construction with a more comprehensive knowledge of the natural sciences and humanities, and systematically master professional basic theory and experimental skills of environm ental science, environmental engineering and ecology. The school hopes the undergraduate students can apply the learned knowledge to their research fields, such as ecological monitoring, evaluation, planning and management, engineering design and operation management, or continue their studies in well-known universities or institutes at home and abroad. In order to enhance professional practice ability of students, the school sets up a number of practice bases with more than 20 enterprises and institutions in Changbai Mountain and Longwan Nature Reserve, Dalian Economic Development Zone, and Northeast Design Institute of Urban Design. In order to improve horizons and innovations of students, the school recommend students to study in well-known universities at home and abroad, support students to take part in academic projects and competitions. In recent years, students have made outstanding achievements in the international university students' sustainable conference, the Challenge Cup, and other international and domestic competitions. Additionally, many students have been accepted as postgraduate students by domestic and overseas famous universities, such as Stanford University, Manchester University and Tsinghua University.The school has the rights to award doctoral degrees in Environmental Science and Engineering, and Ecology (cooperation with the School of Life Sciences, NENU). The school is currently able to recruit Ph.D. students majoring in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, and Ecology, and the research area includes Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Biology, Environmental Planning and Management, Water Pollution Control Engineering, Environmental Engineering Microbiology, Water Pollution Monitoring and Control, Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling, Pollution Ecology, Animal Ecology, Ecosystem Conservation and Ecology Restoration, Ecological Security Assessment and Management. Among them, Environmental Science is the key discipline in Jilin Province. The school has always attached importance to the construction of platform for student education. Over the years, we have established a number of practice bases through cooperation with Forestry Department, Environmental Protection Department, Northeast Institute of Geography and Agricultural Ecology, Institute of Environmental Science in Jilin Province.
